The big buzz right now with the advent of Obama Care is trying to lower costs of disease care. What the real focus should be on is how can I as a dentist help you become as healthy as you want to be. The big misconception is that treatment leads to a patient becoming healthy. Preventing the diseases, that are controllable but not curable, is where the real emphasis should be placed. If I can coach you and help you know what the causes of tooth decay and gum disease are, and how you can effectively remove the cause, would that lead you to health? Indeed it would! The definition of a doctor really is a teacher not a treater. So the question really becomes would you rather pay in part or the whole, for disease care OR not have the disease in the first place. In fact I can fix you and watch you continue to break down, or help you become as healthy as you want to be. A doctor can take your disease away from you but they can’t make you healthy. Only the patient can do that for themselves.
The question that I ask all my patients the first time that we meet together is this: “What do you do on a daily basis to protect your overall general health.” This is an important question because if they are doing nothing and are not concerned about their overall general health, why would they be concerned about their dental health. Here are some questions that I would like you to think about pertaining to your general health: How long are you planning to live? What will your quality of life be in the last 10 years? How would it be if you could be healthy and stay that way? What would your quality of your life be then? What would it be like to have a doctor that would spend time with you helping you get beyond disease instead of just treating your symptoms of the disease that you have? There are integrative doctors that have their Practices dedicated to this very concept. Remember that prevention is the least expensive form of care and one that Capital Hill pays little or no attention to. Prevention is the Principle of the Path: Andy Stanley says this and I think it fits nicely in closing. “The Direction, not the Intention, leads to the Destination.” If you would like more information about the concept of Health First, or you are tired of spinning around in the Disease Cycle and want to enjoy long-term health, please visit my website at scottr140.sg-host.com or call me at 402-572-8000.
